  2. A couple things came to my attention recently. In the interest of 
  3. protecting the potential Alpha buyers here, I'll relay the info.
  4.  
  5. The President of Aspen is Steve Spring. Steve was the President of 
  6. Progressive Peripherals and Software (PPS). For those of you unfamiliar, 
  7. PPS manufactured Amiga accelerators (Zeus, Mercury etc.) and some 
  8. software, notably 3D Professional.
  9.  
  10. About the time they went out of business a couple years ago, I was 
  11. working at a Toaster dealer. I had no idea they were about to dissapear 
  12. forever. This was just after the release of the 4000 and GVP had dropped 
  13. their prices signifigantly on their 2000 and 3000 accelerators. I needed 
  14. an '040 for my 2000 and I wanted a Zeus, so I called PPS hoping to deal.

  16. I talked with Steve and he agreed to sell me a Zeus35MHz w/ 16MB for $400 
  17. below their current dealer cost. It was still more expensive than the GVP 
  18. but I went for it because 1) 16 32pin SIMM Sockets 2) SCSI2. I got the 
  19. board and loved it, so a friend bought one from Steve too. He wasn't so 
  20. happy, instead of the 4x4MB SIMMs that were promised, he got a board 
  21. loaded with 1MB SIMMs. The SCSI2 controller failed the first week. Steve 
  22. would not return his calls. That week, PPS dropped prices drastically on 
  23. all their products, sold off their stock and disappeared.

  25. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, my Zeus still runs (with the addition 
  26. of an extra fan), but I know there were more than a few people left 
  27. hanging when theirs died.

  29. I've recently heard that Aspen sold a bunch of Alpha's with bum video 
  30. cards to Amblin. It seems that Steve Spring has not learned anything 
  31. about business ethics, and in fact has the nerve to screw not just me and 
  32. my friend but Speilberg as well.

  34. My advice to you, if you're buying an Alpha, is to stay away from Steve 
  35. Spring and Aspen.
